Neurotoxins
AKA Botox/Dysport

What are Neurotoxins?

Neurotoxins, also known as Botox and Dysport are injectable solutions that temporarily block nerve receptors in the muscle, preventing lines and wrinkles from forming. Dysport and Botox are both considered nonsurgical forms of wrinkle treatment that have quick recovery rates. Due to over exaggerated facial movements, your finelines and wrinkles can become more prominent and more visible over time causing your wrinkles to become static. If dynamic and static wrinkles are not treated, this allows those fine lines to deepen and become harder to reverse when treating signs of aging.

Are Neurotoxins safe?

In high doses without precise application, the neurotoxin could be very dangerous.  However, when harnessed for therapeutic or cosmetic procedures, they can be safely and beneficially applied to reduce specific muscle movements. To stop these movements, a small amount of neurotoxin is injected directly into the targeted muscle groups. The relaxed muscles lead to skin that looks smoother and more youthful for about three to four months until the effect is lost.

What Areas Can Neurotoxin Injections Treat?

Neurotoxins best address wrinkles that are directly linked to the movement of facial muscles.

Common areas for neurotoxin treatment include:

N

Glabellar lines

The frown lines between the eyes that look like a number eleven

N

Crow’s feet

The wrinkles at the corners of the eyes that can resemble crow foot impressions

N

Forehead creases

The horizontal lines across the forehead

N

Lip lines

Lines that occur around the mouth

N

Bunny lines

The wrinkles that develop on the nose

Neurotoxin injections may also be used to address an uneven smile, downturned corners of the mouth, pebbling of the chin, contouring of the lower face and jawline, and neck rejuvenation.

Getting Started with a Cosmetic Dermatology Consultation

Before Sculpt Practioners provide any neurotoxin treatment, they’ll ask that you schedule a consultation. During this initial appointment, we will examine your skin, discuss your goals, and help you choose the right treatment options. Your medical provider will also want to review your health history to ensure you have no conditions that will negatively impact the way neurotoxin injections work. Depending on your concerns, we may recommend combining your injectable treatments with other cosmetic procedures like dermal fillers or laser therapies to achieve the ideal final results.

What to Expect on the Day of Treatment?

The neurotoxin injection treatment visit is quick and comfortable. We’ll use an extremely fine-gauge needle to ensure we’re able to administer the neurotoxin with minimal discomfort. The injection site is precisely determined to pinpoint specific muscle groups, and we’ll quickly inject the neurotoxin in the predetermined locations. Most side effects are very mild, including skin redness and minor inflammation that will clear up after a few hours in most people. Some patients experience a mild headache after the procedure that then resolves.

Your Results & Maintenance Visits

The onset of neurotoxin will vary by type used, ranging from a few days to a week.  Maximal effect is typically seen at 2 weeks after treatment.  During your treatment planning visit, our dermatologist will discuss how often you should consider retreatment to maintain your results for the long term. For most people, that means having maintenance treatments three or four times each year. However, some early indications from new research suggest that individuals who begin receiving neurotoxin injections to prevent the development of fine lines and wrinkles, starting in their late twenties or early thirties, may actually be able to train their facial muscles to remain relaxed.
